The American Bittern is one of the marsh’s most elusive hunters, moving with slow precision through dense reeds. Designed to vanish in a heartbeat, it rarely offers a clear view. I had to line up a perfect gap in the vegetation to capture these moments as it slipped through the wetlands in search of its next meal. #americanbittern #bittern #birds #nature #wildlife #sonyalpha #wildlifevideos | Amber Favorite Photography

He’s looking right at me… isn’t he? 😳 Meet our resident grump, the American Bittern. His beak goes perfectly vertical when he’s trying to blend into reeds (a classic “I am invisible” pose) but those eyes? Still watching, still judging. Definitely not impressed with our photography skills. 📸 #americanbittern | Wildlife Care Association of Sacramento

Has anyone else heard any booming sounds coming from their local marsh? Our bird project learder Doug Morin tells us more: "This is a male American Bittern, performing it’s vocalization – sometimes called “booming.” Bitterns are a highly camouflaged and secretive species that inhabit dense shallow marshes. The strong, low-pitched “booming” call is important because it carries a long distance, allowing competing males and interested females to know where the displaying bird is, despite their habi

American Bittern… aka "thunder-pumper", "stake-driver", "mire-drum". Though not often seen, their sounds are commonly heard in the Refuge marshes this time of year. These secretive marshbirds frequent shorelines and vegetation edges that are dominated by tall emergent wetland plants. Their calls - loud, low, resonant, pumping sounds - are used to communicate within the thick vegetation, apparently to defend territory and find mates. This individual was both heard and seen (through a spotting sco

This very angry American Bittern was send to us with the help of the hsgniagara. Unfortunately he must have suffered an impact of sorts and ruptured an air sack. Birds have relatively small lungs and to aid them with oxygen exchange they have air sacks in various locations of their body. We have drained the excess air and he’ll be on antibiotics and pain meds until it heals at which point he’ll be able to leave us to continue migration. These bitterns are such cool birds. American Bittern Botaurus lentiginosus In this video we see the sharp-eyed bittern stealthily stalking along the water’s edge and sneaking around a clump of tall grass in search of prey. We are rewarded by finally seeing it capture a rather large crayfish, Cambarus ssp., which it downs in a couple of gulps. Male bitterns are known for their loud booming calls that reverberate around the marshes of their northern breeding and nesting grounds in the spring, where they are more likely to be heard t
